Microneedling has become popular lately, and it’s one of the most talked-about skincare trends. It’s designed to help you get flawless skin with a better tone and texture.
The treatment involves needles and is a pretty unique approach to managing skin problems. Needless to say, it brings up a lot of questions, concerns, and misconceptions.
Here are a few microneedling myths you can stop worrying about.
Reality: Like most other aesthetic treatments, microneedling is pretty safe and low risk. The only reason many people find it dangerous is that it involves needles! However, these needles are only meant to treat the top-most superficial layers of the skin; and aren’t touching any deeper tissue.
Also, like any other procedure, microneedling comes with small risks of side effects, including inflammation, redness, or in rare cases, infections. However, these side effects are typically temporary and can be avoided with proper pre and post care.
Reality: This myth is a primary reason for many people not choosing microneedling as a skin treatment option. A lot of times, when the microneedling process is explained to interested clients as a treatment that requires making several tiny punctures into the skin, they back off.
What’s important to understand, though, is that before the treatment begins, we apply a numbing cream to the face. As a result, during microneedling, you’ll feel little to no pain at all. At most, you’ll feel minimal discomfort or a tingling sensation.
Myth No. 3: It Leaves Visible Holes in Your Skin
Reality: The purpose of microneedling is to create controlled injuries in the skin so that the skin’s repair process can be activated. This is done by using needles to make tiny punctures, but these very small holes can’t even be seen by the naked eye; moreover, they’re sealed within about 4 hours.
The whole point of microneedling is to give your skin a more flawless appearance, so no, it doesn’t leave any visible holes on your skin’s surface. At most, there may be a faint blush for a few days after treatment.
Reality: While this was true when microneedling first became popular, it’s been worked around. With newer tools and innovation, it’s now possible to safely microneedle around the eyes and lips.
These are still sensitive areas with thin skin, so they do require specialized tools and experts who know what they’re doing.
Myth No. 5: Microneedling Damages The Skin
Reality: The truth is that the treatment is designed to cause micro damages to the skin, as that is what’s required to trigger collagen production.
That said, the minimal damage doesn’t last forever, and as the skin rebuilds its collagen, it takes care of the treatment-related damage as well as your skin’s underlying issues such as scarring and uneven tone and so on.
Reality: While microneedling is an incredibly popular anti-aging treatment, it’s not all that it’s good for. The microneedling process is designed around the idea of kickstarting the skin’s repair process by stimulating collagen production.
So yes, while your wrinkles and fine lines will thank you for it, it will also be a great treatment for things like acne scars, stretch marks, sun damage, and other skin imperfections.
Reality: No amazing skin treatments come without downtime, but microneedling probably comes with the quickest recovery. When you’re done with the treatment, your skin is already on its way to healing itself, and all you really need to do is wait.
You will, of course, feel some discomfort when the numbing agent wears off, but it’s not unbearably painful, and in a few minutes, you’ll adjust to it. Your aesthetician will also give you some specific aftercare instructions, including pain-relieving options. If you follow all the instructions to the T, your recovery should be completed within 2-3 days at most!
Reality: This isn’t exactly true because once your skin is triggered to start its repair process, there will be a few differences in its appearance. We’re not talking about complete transformations but subtle changes. If you have deep scars, and other prominent skin imperfections, it might take a few sessions for you to see a visible difference in those.
That said, everyone’s skin is different. Some people may require several sessions, while others may need only 1 or 2; it’s best to speak to a consultant before you make up your mind.
Myth No. 9: You’ll See Results Almost Instantly
Reality: While you don’t need multiple sessions to see the tiniest changes, we’d also be exaggerating if we said that your skin would be transformed overnight. Microneedling is generally a very gradual process.
Even after you get your first microneedling session, your skin will continue to evolve for the next few weeks as it repairs itself; therefore, you won’t be seeing any results right away.
Reality: While microneedling tools are easily available these days, microneedling at home isn’t the same as the microneedling procedures at med spas. For starters, the equipment used isn’t the same; the needles are much shorter and won’t have a similar effect. Also, our midcroneedling is coupled with radiofrequency which helps promote further skin rejuvenation.
Moreover, it’s simply not the safest approach to do this at home. At a med spa, we go to lengths to ensure that the treatment is pain-free and safe. You may not be able to ensure the same at home, and there’s a greater risk of developing skin infections.
